Someone sent me an email yesterday asking the difference between my A Prompt A Day and My A Life Made By Hand class. Here's what I wrote back to her-
They're two totally different classes. It's a brand new class as I do not like to teach the same class repetitively. I have a lot of repeat students every month (both in person classes and online) so I need to make sure that I am offering something new and unique. My students really do push me and I want to teach classes that push them.
First off, the new class is much cheaper. $50 for 6 months. That's the one that grabs everyone off the bat.
People thought you had to keep up with A Prompt A Day and do it daily, but that was never the case. It's the same thing with A Life Made By Hand. There are 181 new journaling (yes, writing) prompts that are new and designed to make you think. I think they're more introspective. There are new writing prompts in ALMBH.
There are new collage techniques. NO painting. We're doing what I call "Painting with paper" where the focus is all collage. There are 25 collage techniques on the board. All different, all new.
I will be doing video demos as well. There are 5 on the board now with more to follow.
There are two different "How to make your own journal" pdfs on the board and one video, in case you do want to make your own journal by hand.
There are thousands of different prompts and ways of looking at things. I've found that out in my 12 years of teaching.
This class is specifically set up so that you can do a page in 15 minutes or less. You can do them daily or you can do them at your own leisure (for example, you could have your own mini retreat and do the prompts over a weekend or something like that). The prompts aren't hard, but they're not simple either. They are thoughtful, introspective and designed to make you think in new ways.
By the way, nothing has a date on it. The writing prompts are numbered as 1 to 181. The collage prompts are diagrams that are the size of 2x3" ATC size cards that you can cut out and carry in your wallet. Nothing says January 1st, 2nd, etc... I set it up that way so that no one would panic if they missed a date, that no one would think they had to do this daily (even though I do encourage it, but again work as you need to). It is stress free and fun.
There is some basic 411 info (paper I use, pen info, some other things too) on the board that I've copied over from A Prompt A Day, but it's meant to be a simple FAQ for my classes since I tend to use the same materials, but I approach my pages in a different way each time.

I'm starting my prep work for next weekend! I'll be heading to Frenzy Stamper in Scottsdale teaching five mixed media workshops May 2nd-4th. I have pictures and info here. There's still room so please spread the word!! (BTW, if you like the journal pages that were on this blog from January until early March that is my "Snippets" class-creating a journal with various size pages, tabs and all sorts of fun goodies. Not only do we do mixed media techniques in all of the bookbinding workshops but we will also be learning collage (composition/design techniques) as well (and those of you who have taken classes with me know my motto-there are THOUSANDS of different mixed media and collage techniques out there and I'm determined to teach as many as I can figure out and pass them along to you)!!! I'm excited!!! I LOVE going there-it's one of my favorite stores!!! Even if you can't take a workshop, make sure you stop in and check it out!
I taught my revamped and revised Artist's Journal class at Stampin From The Heart in L.A. Here are some of the exercises we started to do on the inside pages.
Um, did I tell you that the handout is 20 (or 21, I forget-it's BIG) pages long? Part two is over that many pages!!! They're classes that I developed in 1999 and taught a LOT. Then I put them on the back burner for various reasons to focus on other things. Well, now I've brought them back and they are actually brand new classes. The only thing you "get" from the "old class" is a copy of the old handout AND the new handout. I don't know why I don't just call them by new names and not give out the old handouts any more other then the fact that I just worked so darn hard on those handouts-I mean, they are my biggest handouts *ever*...so it's almost like, "Here. I'm sharing. Take. Enjoy. DO. Please!!" I have been a journal advocate for YEARS. I swear by them...I'm looking forward to the new journaling classes. As I said before, they are technically brand new classes with old names...

Mom arrives tomorrow night into LAX. David, Tristan and I are going to The Academy for the 11th Annual Marc Davis Celebration of Animation. We've gone to several of them. The only ones we missed were the ones we didn't find out about (no mailings, etc...) We even went when Tristan was a babe in arms. We had people come up to us afterwards and say "There was a baby in here?? He's so well behaved." Um. Yeah, I was nursing. I knew how to quiet him, need be. LOL Actually, he's always been well behaved. We're lucky...Plus he likes film.
Thursday morning we're leaving bright and early for Frenzy Stamper. I'm really looking forward to seeing Debbie and the gang. There's still room in the workshops so if you're hemming and hawwing and waiting til the last minute-c'mon, you know it will be fun...plus, not only will you make some wayyyyyyyy cool but you'll learn LOTS of new techniques! Hey, I wanna be like Hanna when I grow up...This looks cool!!!! Most of you know I've been working on a 'zine for some time now off and on...but, what if I took that energy and self published a BOOK BOOK? Hmmm...People have been saying it to me for years...what do YOU Think? What would you want? I'm geared towards something that is all art...a little words...not so much how to....but what do you want..whaddya think?
I really hate to move on to a new post..looking at Gaiman/Ross going at it just cracks me up every time I see it (sorry Neil!! I think Neil turned about fifty shades of red)
Heads up, this Saturday, Violet's Rubber Stamp Inn in Ventura is having their last class before Violet closes the doors this month.
