Put it on your wish list...save your pennies...you NEED this...

Finally, after I don't know how many years of waiting, it's HERE. Taschen Books: Peter Beard a.k.a. "The Working Man's Edition". Every visit to Book Soup in West Hollywood, had me lusting after this version which I could neither lift nor ever afford ($2,000 now priced between $6,000 and $15,000). I would spend most of my visit flipping through the pages. The damn book was so big, I could almost wrap myself in the pages. I hemmed. I hawed. I thought, "Why the hell won't Taschen put out an edition *I* can afford?" Well, they have and it arrived yesterday:
There are several pages like this due to the voluminous amount of journals that Peter Beard has kept. I love the two page spreads with journals spread out across the fold:
Seriously, I think this is one of my favorite parts of the book. Check it out, it's the very edges. On some of the photos you can see the edges of the rest of the journal that is being photographed. I love shit like this. It makes it look like (and almost feel like) the behemoth that you are holding is his actual journal.
The book is available for $63 (and free shipping) on amazon. I know it's a big chunk of change. I was lucky enough to get a gift certificate for amazon for my birthday and the book cost me $13.

I'm thinking of doing a post one of these days of my favorite books, you know, the ones I think you need and the ones I know I can't live without. This is definitely included in the "can't live without" list.

More on Beard here, here and here.

Get out and VOTE. In CA-No on 4. No on 8.

Remember, most of us, regardless of our political affiliation or parties, want the same things: education, health care, jobs and a good standard of living. Regardless of who wins, we need to come together and work to make sure that the politicians work for us and pass laws that benefit us collectively and not big business.

I'm very excited and looking forward to teaching at one of my favorite locations!!

I have five workshops lined up for Frenzy Stamper in Scottsdale, AZ October 3-5th:

Page by page, we will start to “Tell” your story weaving layers of acrylic mediums, collage ephemera and the written word. Accompanying this workshop will be a handout full of new ideas and exercises guaranteed to bring any story teller out and onto the page.

Revelations: Revealing the layers-2 hours In this mixed media workshop, we will dig deep unearthing layers of paint and paper. Learn a plethora of new techniques while creating a unique artist's book! We will explore new ideas utilizing paint, paper and glue. If you like the "layered" look and learning new techniques, you will LOVE this workshop!

The instructor will be supplying an array of professional artist acrylics and mediums, rubberstamps, collage ephemera, and all necessary materials.

What Next 5 hours You’ve made your journal, your altered book, your artist’s book. In fact, you’ve probably made more the one. You’ve got the gusto, now get the inspiration, the ideas and new techniques you’ve been craving for. In this workshop, we will spend the class working hands on IN the pages of your book. You will learn new mixed media techniques (yup, we’ll cover it all-all NEW ideas!!) that will have you reaching for your paint brush or glue stick on a regular basis! You will need a journal or several sheets of heavy cardstock for this class!

Funky Chunky Book:In this fast paced, but very fun 2 hour class, we will assemble the perfect 'catch all' book. We will create an easy to sew "funky chunky" book, a fun sized 'chunky' book filled with 'funky' pages. Use this unique artists' book as journal, scrapbook, photo album, trade holder, doodle book, and more. The size of the book holds a LOT of pages so this is a little book will be by your side for a while. I love the odd little size of it-it's perfect to carry in your bag with you around town. It's also perfect as the ultimate 'inspiration' book someplace where you can glue in, sew in, attach and hold all of your found ephemera treasures. This isn't the Chunky Book you know...it's the Funky Chunky Book...

Supplies needed: Scissors, bone folder, cork backed metal ruler, 3 1" bristle brushes to paint and glue with, container to hold water in, roll of paper towels, and a roll of waxed paper. The instructor will be supplying an array of professional artist acrylics and mediums, rubber stamps, collage ephemera, and all necessary materials to create the journal.

Swatches: Little Paper Books 5 hours I'm absolutely addicted to these
little books. I guarantee after this class, you'll be too! After you pick from a hodge podge of "found" papers, you will assemble a variety of little paper books. We will quickly assemble a small pile of "swatches" learning a quick and easy bookbinding stitch as you go. We will then start to work quickly on the pages (but not too quickly) working in multiple books at one time, listening to our muses (no criticism only soft whispers of "go for it..."), we will collage, stamp, paint, doodle, stitch and play on the pages. You will learn how to work fast. You will learn a variety of new mixed media collage techniques. You will walk out with a small pile of books that you can toss in a bag and bring with you anywhere and everywhere.

These are the little booklets that I was telling you about last week. I didn't have as much time as I thought I would to work on these while at Comic Con, but I managed to get some pages done. I am totally TOTALLY in love with these little books. I fit 5 of them (though I ended up only bringing 3) along with a ton of collage crap in a little blue wet ones bin. These are a brand new class I will be debuting this Fall and I hope you will love them as much as I do :) They are portable and all you need is a glue stick and a pen, and you can bring them anywhere!!!

FYI,

I have two classes this coming weekend in Thousand Oaks and in L.A. More info can be found here. Both classes are a GO. If you are interested in the Thousand Oaks class, please email ME to sign up. If you are interested in L.A., please phone the store.

In a week, I will be leaving for Art Unraveled. I'm teaching 4 workshops and I can't wait!!!

After AU, I will be home for a couple of days and then Tristan and I jump on a plane and go back East. I'll be teaching both weekends. The first weekend I will be at The Stamp Act in Marshfield
and the following weekend, I will be at Ink About It in Westford. There are samples in the store and I will post more pictures on my workshop info blog about the MA classes next week.

Posting may be erratic...I'm just trying to get everything done before we leave! :)
